I recently contacted various friends and colleagues in about twenty British universities in an attempt to get a snapshot of where Chaucer studies stand. Nearly twenty years on, things seem to have become worse. It did find that there were fewer than ten mandatory courses and twenty-nine optional courses. Her report did not specify in any detail how much Chaucer each taught. Field found that sixty-three departments of English in the UK then taught Chaucer. The last overview I can find was a survey conducted by Rosalind Field in 2005 (Chaucer Teaching in UK Universities ). As things stand, there seems to be no coherent current body of evidence about the undergraduate university teaching of Chaucer. It has been frequently asserted in the media that the real motive is a desire to "decolonize" the curriculum, a suggestion that the University has denied.īut it is possible to set Leicester's decision in wider contexts that raise larger questions about Chaucer's chances of survival as a subject of academic study in the UK. This assertion has been questioned and the University has not presented evidence to substantiate its claim. The reason initially given by the University for this decision was economic: these courses were not popular with undergraduates. Several medievalists at Leicester have now lost their jobs, and incoming students will henceforward be denied the opportunity to study the father of English poetry (among much else). The announcement prompted widespread and ineffectual protests.
